Lily: I had a lot on my mind. So where are you taking my daughter tonight?
Dan: I... I don’t know. I thought maybe we’d do a walking tour of New York underground, visit my friends the mole people. They’re great, except they only ever eat leftovers. I’m sorry. I don’t know why I just said any of that. I have-I have this thing, this nervous tic where I never stop speaking, like, ever. In fact, when I was a little boy, my mom used to say there was never a word I met that I didn’t like. You know what else I like? Your daughter. I-I really like your daughter. I... (Serena comes out or her bedroom) Wow.

Serena: No. Look, I wanted a date with you, just not the date you thought I wanted. It’s-It’s fine.
Dan: All right, all right. Well, then... If it’s a real Dan Humphrey date that you want, then it’s a real Dan Humphrey date that you’re gonna get. Let’s go.
Serena: Really?
Dan: Yes. Mademoiselle.


Dan: Ooh! And another one. Sorry, Joe. That’s game. (Serena comes over to him) Uh, that’s 75 bucks. I think that pays for your duck.
Serena: That it does. Thank you.
Dan: So what now?
Serena: You play me.
Dan: You?
Serena: Yeah, unless you’re afraid to lose.
Dan: I think the only thing being lost in this game would be your dignity.
Serena: Oh, really?
Dan: Yes.
Serena: You think so?
Dan: I think so.
Serena: Well, then rack ‘em up. I’ll buy us a soundtrack.

Serena: And if you made half the effort she did, maybe we would’ve met a long time ago.
Dan: That’s true.
Serena: Then so maybe you would’ve kissed me already.
Dan: No five-Star restaurants. No town car.
Serena: No smoky pool hall or bad ’80s music.
Dan: Looks like we finally found common ground.

Serena: Dan? What are you doing here?
Dan: I’m saving you.
Serena: I don’t need to be saved.
Dan: Really? ‘Cause I could see you eyes roll up the back of your head from across the room.
Serena: Dan.

Dan: Serena, wait.
Serena: What are you really doing here, Dan?
Dan: What am I doing here? I ran across the city. I rented a tuxedo. I stole this mask from some drunken kid, only to look like Robin. I conned my way in here, all to see you. I care.
Serena: Well, you didn’t seem to care this morning, when you were with another girl and lied to me.
Dan: What? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I-I didn’t... well... I did. Yeah. I did, but i can explain.
Serena: Go ahead. Give it your best shot.
Dan: I was with my friend Vanessa. We’re very close, and she moved away to Vermont last year, and now she’s back.
Serena: Okay, so why’d you lie and say it was jenny?
Dan: Because I’m an idiot. I d... I don’t know why. I... look, Vanessa and I... our relationship is a little complicated, or it was, before I met you. And honestly, I didn’t want anything to get in the way of you inviting me to this... stupid party.
Serena: Well, I was gonna invite you.
Dan: Really? You’re not into, uh, Pompous Ass IV?
Serena: You’re saying you’re not into your old friend, Vanessa?
Dan: (takes her mask off) That is exactly what I’m saying. (and they kiss)

Dan: Let me say... for the record... I like you. Only you.
Serena: Well, that’s good, because I feel the same about you.
Dan: I’m glad that’s cleared up.
Serena: Hey, um, you know, I hear the ice capades are coming to town.
Dan: Mm. If you’re there, so am I.

Serena: You know, we should talk about this, though, about us, about eventually.
Dan: Definitely, yes.
Serena: Or we could just get it over with in a broom closet.
Dan: In a broom closet? that is- that is rich, Serena. Mr. Peiser’s waiting.

Dan: Okay, I’m ready. May I? I know it may not compare to, uh, a suite at the Ritz in Paris or a chalet in Aspen, and it might be a fire hazard, but...
Serena: It’s perfect.


Dan: I’m really happy to be here with you right now.
Serena: Wait.
Dan: What? What, did I do something wrong?
Serena: No...
Dan: I knew the hair thing was too much.
Serena: No, no, it’s just, um...
Dan: um, “um” is never good. What?
Serena: I...I’m scared.

Dan: That’s fair. All right, so tomorrow, you and I will go somewhere together, just the two of us, and we will talk about my family in excruciating detail until you are- you’re just so bored, you’re begging for Vanessa to take over, all right? How’s that sound?
Serena: Perfect.
Dan: All right.
(They kiss)
Serena: Come on. It’s almost midnight.
Dan: What happens at midnight?

Serena: There you are. What’s going on?
Dan: I’ll tell you what’s going on. I just became your escort to the ball.

Dan: I gotta be honest about something here. Um, i don’t think your grandmother is who you think she is.
Serena: What are you talking about?
Dan: I know she’s got the whole free spirit act perfected...
Serena: Act?
Dan: But I don’t think she has your best interests at heart.
Serena: Where are you going with this, Dan?
Dan: She came by my dad’s gallery today.
Serena: Well, she probably just wanted to see your mom’s art.
Dan: No, she was trying to buy him off so I wouldn’t go with you tonight.
Serena: No, she wouldn’t do something like that.
Dan: Serena, that’s what I’m trying to tell you. That woman is the most manipulative person I’ve ever met. She makes your-your mother look like Gandhi.
Serena: That’s my grandmother you’re talking about. I love her.
Dan: I know. I know, and I’m so sorry, but maybe you love her so much that you can’t see what she’s doing. (sighs) I said it. There.
Serena: Maybe we shouldn’t be doing this.

Serena: Merry Christmas! Do you like it? Do you think it’s cheesy?
Dan: No. No, no, it’s-It’s incredible. How did you do this?
Serena: Well, I had help from my elves.
Dan: Your present is waiting for you at home, but, um, I did bring a little pre-present for you. (He gives Serena a folded piece of paper with a ribbon. Serena opens it.)
Serena: Wait. This is your story.
Dan: Yeah, it’s the original. It’s right out of the spiral notebook.
Serena: I’m kinda scared to read it. What happened on October 8th, 2005?
Dan: Well, I was accidentally invited to a birthday party where I met a girl. She only spoke two sentences to me, but I’ve never forgotten her.
Serena: Wait. Your story’s about me?

(They start kissing and Serena begins to take off her dress)
Dan: Are we really gonna do this?
Serena: Yeah.


Dan: The arts and crafts were impressive, but how did you manage the real snow?
Serena: I’m well-Connected. (Laughs)
Dan: This is, without question, the best Christmas ever.
Serena: Ever in the history of Christmas.
Dan: I hate to break the spell, but, uh, we better get home before our families wake up.

season 1, episode 12

Dan: Hey, Serena.
Vanessa: (filming Dan) yes! Finally some action.
Serena: Hey. What are you up to? Besides missing me?
Dan: Oh, uh, just wondering if you’re missing me.
Serena: Aw! Well, of course I am, at this party that would be a lot more fun if you were here.
Dan: Party? I thought it was a quiet night with Blair, your last night at her place before your mom comes home?
Serena: Yeah, we were, and then Kati and Is showed up, and we all went out, and we ran into some people and then ended up here.

Dan: Look, I’m all for loyalty and I’m all for sticking together, but we are not in the same boat here. I’m on a partial scholarship. My parents have no way of buying my way back into this school, or any other. And I know this isn’t going to be a popular opinion with-with your band of brothers, but if the person who brought that key refuses to step up, then anybody who knows anything has the right to say something. Do-do you know who it is? You do, don’t you, and you’re not gonna say anything?
Serena: Dan, please. You don’t understand.
Dan: You’re right. I-I mean, I don’t understand.

Serena: Dan is my boyfriend. And I know we’re too young to talk about forever, but right now that’s what it feels like.
Lily: I know it does, sweetie, but-
Serena: But what? Tell me that Rufus is that important to you. Tell me that whatever the two of you have is the most important thing in your life, because that’s what Dan is to me, mom. The most important. I would rather be Chuck’s stepsister than Dan’s. Please don’t do this to me.
Lily: Dan means that much to you?
Serena: Yeah, he does.


[Gossip Girl: Sometimes you need to step outside, clear your head and remind yourself of who you are... and where you want to be.]
Dan: Hey. You’re a little overdressed for the study date I didn’t know we had.
Serena: You were right, about everything.
Dan: You wanna talk about it?
(Serena shakes her head)
Serena: Can I just sit here with you for a while?
Dan: Yeah.
Serena: Chaucer?
Dan: Yeah, I got a test on Friday.
Serena: Mine’s thursday.

Serena: Hey. I’ve been calling you every two seconds for the past hour.
Dan: Oh, I left my cell at home. I-I kinda had a lot on my mind.
Serena: I know, and I’m-I’m sorry-
Dan: No, wait, wait, wait. Me first. I’m sorry that you didn’t feel that you could tell me, and no matter what you decide, I want you to know that I’m here for you because I-I-I-because I love you.
Serena: Dan, I’m not pregnant. So you don’t have to say that. I mean, you don’t have to, because, um, I get it. You would have done the right thing. Um, thank you, though. that- that’s-that’s really sweet.
Dan: Yeah, yeah, well, hey, that’s good news- the no baby part. It’s really good news, like my-dad’s-probablygonna- throw-a-party-good news.

Serena: Where were we?
Dan: Well, let’s try this. Why don’t you tell me what’s on your mind. Then it can be on our minds. And our minds can worry about what’s on your mind... together.
Serena: I have no idea what you just said.
Dan: I don’t know what I said, either. But what I’m saying now is... talk to me.


Serena: I-you okay? you’re doing that, um... thing.
Dan: Yeah, I-I know. I’m sorry. I... It’s just... i-i don’t know. In-in the short time we’ve known each other, you-you’ve become really important to me. I’ve been struggling to find a way to tell you, struggling now.

Serena: Did you tell Jenny about Blair and Chuck?
Dan: No! No, of course not.
Serena: But you’re the only one I told.
Dan: And I didn’t tell anybody.
Serena: How can I know that?
Dan: Because I gave you my word. Because I love you.
Serena: Huh?
Dan: I love you. And not just because I thought you were pregnant. And I know how you love some random guy who picks up your Lit papers and girl who likes your hair.

Dan: Hey! What are you doing here?
Serena: I need to know why you love me.
Dan: Because I do.
Serena: I really want to trust you when you say those words, Dan, so maybe if I knew why, I’d stop being so scared of hearing them and afraid to say them.
Dan: Okay. Well, if you want to talk about why...
Serena: It has to do with my mom and her many marriages.
Dan: There. that’s why. Because I actually like it when you interrupt me, which is often, by the way. I love you because you make no apologies about being exactly who you are... Beautiful, smart, sexy as hell.
Serena: Now you’re embarrassing me.
Dan: That’s another reason. You’re completely unaware of your affect on me. You’re also completely unaware that you laugh like a 4 year old.
(Serena laughs)
Dan: Just like that. And I love you because you can be with someone like me and still be best friends with someone like Blair.
Serena: Yeah, well, I tried to be.
Dan: I know you do, and that’s not easy, but you never give up on her. That is how amazing you are.
Serena: Well, you’re amazing, too, for being able to say all of those things, you just are. (they kiss) And I love you... But I have to go.

Dan: Mm, you’re not gonna tell me the chuck shower story again, are you?

Dan: Hey, you know what? I’ve got some stories, too, uh, about seeing my mother for the first time since she left at Christmas.
Serena: I’m the worst girlfriend.
Dan: No, you’re not. No, you’re not. There’s the funny visit to my grandma at the old folks’ home- two women, a sponge bath and a bedpan.

Serena: Well, I got food poisoning, and then Chuck helped me out.
Dan: Okay, where exactly did you eat that you got this killer food poisoning Migraine?
Serena: Can we drop the interrogation?
Dan: As soon as you tell me where my girlfriend is.
Serena: I’m right here with you.
Dan: Look, I...I gotta go to class. I can’t... I can’t do this.

Dan: So... (sighs) she’s great, right? What do you think?
Serena: Honestly, there’s something I don’t really like about her.
Dan: Okay, but you had your doubts about Vanessa in the beginning, And now you guys are friends.
Serena: This is different.
Dan: (Sighs) I-I don’t understand why you-You’re...

Dan: Jealous. There’s no reason to be. She–She actually wanted us to patch things up.
Serena: What, you told her about our problems?
Dan: Yes, because she wanted to listen to them, and she had good advice, too.
Serena: Look at me. I love you, okay? You just have to take my word for it. Do not trust her.
Dan: But you just met her. I… You know, you’ve been hanging out with chuck and you’ve been partying and avoiding me and lying, and y-you’re trying to tell me who I can and cannot trust? Dan: Serena!
Nate: She’s telling the truth.
Dan: Are you really gonna stop me from seeing my girlfriend? Come on.
Serena: What are you doing?

Serena: It’s okay.

Dan: Something is going on, and I just want to be let in on what it is.
Serena: It’s hard to explain.
Dan: Why don’t I make it easy for you? I know you’re keeping something from me, and I’m sick of being the only one you don’t talk to about it.

Dan: Is that-is that what you’re so afraid to tell me, that you cheated on me? Did you cheat on me last night? All I need is a yes or a no. Did you sleep with someone else?

Serena (on her cell phone): Hey, Dan. I’ve been trying to reach you all night. I know it’s early, or late if you haven’t slept, like me, but, um, I’m pretty sure after this message, I will have officially filled your voice mail, so I, uh... I-I’m coming over.

Serena: No, I-I know it’s my fault. I... I was just so scared.
Dan: I-I get it. I get it. I mean, "hey, I think I killed someone, and I’m being blackmailed by a crazy girl pretending to be someone else" doesn’t quite roll off the tongue.
Serena: But it’s all over, right? I mean, we can fix this.
Dan: Serena, I-last night-
Serena: It’s okay. You and Georgina and Vanessa were just hanging out, and it got late, and you fell asleep. I’ll see you at the wedding.
(Dan kisses Serena on the forehead and they hug. Then Serena starts leaving but stops at the door)
Serena: When I told my mom not to go away with Rufus, I said it was ’cause you and I were forever. I knew I was right.

Dan: No. Hey, hey. Don’t-don’t run away from me.
Serena: Dan, it’s okay. So you hooked up with Georgina. I kinda figured that when I saw her coming out of your bedroom this morning, But I-I’m willing to let it go. I don’t wanna break up with you.
Dan: Maybe... Maybe I want to break up with you. Maybe I can’t just "let it go." You lied to me over and over, and it was easy for you.
Serena: No, it wasn’t easy.
Dan: I got seduced by a girl pretending to be someone else, and you knew.
Serena: But I couldn’t say anything.
Dan: Well, because you- you were afraid I’d find out you thought you killed someone.
Serena: I was hoping you’d understand.
Dan: I am the most understanding person in the world. But this? And-and-and this is not about who you used to be, your "past," or who you were when we met. I mean, the only reason I was with Georgina was because yesterday morning, you slept with two random guys you met in a bar.
Serena: No, no, I-I didn’t. I just said that.
Dan: How is that less crazy?
Serena: Because I thought it would be easier to forgive than what I really did. So what, Dan? We’re exactly where we were at the bass’ brunch when we first started dating. I’m not who you thought I was, and you can’t forgive that.
Dan: I-I just think too much has happened. I don’t know how to make things go back to what they were.

Dan: (To Serena as they start dancing) I’m sorry.
